Serge Roy, multidisciplinary artist

My work progresses from day to day poetic and metaphorical, intuitive and sequential in a world of the imagination.

I like to discover locations and spaces filled with stories.

I wander and I search, finding artifacts that I use creatively.

I make images, paintings, objects and assemblages that I often present as installations.

Born on October 15, 1953, Serge Roy writes in his biographical notes that he became fascinated by art and by Asian cultures in particular at a very early age. So it wasn’t surprising that, after finishing secondary school, he ended up in India. This was an incredible experience for him, and it made art an even more important factor in his life. Upon his return to Quebec, he enrolled in the plastic arts program at Cégep du Vieux-Montréal. He later took a design course at the Montreal Visual Arts Centre.

For a number of years at the beginning of his career, he mainly worked as a prop man, stylist and decorator in the theatre industry, including at the Opéra-Fête theatre company and at Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (TNM). Despite this professional detour, his interest in the visual arts never stopped growing. He signed up for an engraving course at the renowned Graff workshop, then a paper manufacturing course at Michelle Héon’s workshop.

The year 1986 was an important one for him, as he was able to fully commit to painting, making installations and creating art objects. From the age of 33, Roy participated in many group and individual exhibitions across Quebec. His solo exhibitions were presented at the 1990 Entrée libre à l’art contemporain (ELAAC) event, at Maison de la Culture Frontenac and at Galerie Simon Blais, among other places. In May 1995, he launched a new workshop, presenting paintings and assemblages under the title Voltiges. He was invited to the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris in June 1998, where he exhibited a work called Désirs. He continued to work on his training, participating in a seminar in arts management at Boisvert, Mizoguchi et Associés in Montréal.

In recent years, he’s also acted as a coordinator, director and commissioner for various cultural events in Montreal and area. Serge Roy lives in Saint-Robert, Montérégie.
